Everything has a meaning. The color of breast cancer wristbands is no exception.
Breast cancer, also known as the malignant breast neoplasm, is a kind of cancer that builds up in the breast. It usually originates from the inner lining of lobules where milk comes from. It does not have a direct cure up until now causing thousands of families to suffer emotionally and financially. Breast cancer is a big factor in the mortality rate of women all over the world. And though men could have breast cancer, this is far more common in women.
As time goes by, people are starting to be aware of this illness and are gradually becoming proactive and doing positive acts of helping solve the problem or lessening the number of victims through an awareness campaign, and helping the victims in their treatment through fund raising. Among others, awareness campaigns and fund-raising activities are done by selling breast cancer wristbands.
Breast cancer wristbands come in different colors. If the color is black, then it is for Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness. The color black is also a representation of other kinds of cancer like the skin cancer, Melanoma, Mourning and POW-MIA. The famous pink color is a representation of breast cancer awareness. It also represents inflammatory breast cancer and awareness of testicular cancer.
Breast cancer wristbands are not the only bands representing awareness on cancer. There are also ribbons, bracelets and the like to raise awareness on other cancer diseases. For example, for a blue wristband, the goal is to promote awareness for bowel cancer, Colon Cancer, Colorectal Cancer, Prostate cancer and rectal cancer. Light blue is for prostate cancer, green is for kidney cancer, liver cancer, the color red is for head and neck cancer, white is for bone cancer, yellow is for bladder cancer, childhood cancer, liver cancer and testicular cancer. The color teal represents the awareness campaign for cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, Gynecological Cancera and Uterine Cancer. Grey color promotes awareness on brain and lung cancer.
But of all these colors representing different kinds of cancer, probably the best color is purple. Purple may represent awareness on general cancer, Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Pancreatic Cancer, and Thyroid Cancer. But the best representation for the color purple is on being a cancer survivor.
The breast cancer wristbands and other wristbands may be used for different purposes. It may be given as a gift to a cancer patient with engraved words showing love, care and support. It can be given to send a message to a cancer patient that you are with them all the way and that you will never abandon them or leave them. One may also buy a wristband for himself to show that he cares about the people who are currently in the battlefield where their lives, hopes and dreams are at stake. By wearing breast cancer wristbands, one is showing the world that there is hope. Hope not only that someday there would be a cure… But hope because cancer patients are not alone and that they are thought of and cared for. And that whether or not they survive; they can enjoy life with the people to whom they matter.
